Our Story

Founders, Truman and Mary Lois Kemp, are no strangers to backyard living. Both grew up in small Southern towns in the 50s, where backyard activities and cookouts were part of the family tradition. Mary Lois remembers shucking corn, canning vegetables, cooked on a large brick fireplace and large backyard gatherings with friends and relatives. Truman revels in his memory of a backyard with a fire pit, consisting of a third-cut 55-gallon steel drum for grilling meats and steaming oysters. His first brick project was helping his dad put down a sidewalk in their home in Morehead City, NC. It’s still there today and, although weathered, looks as good as it did 58 years ago, when it was installed.

Innovations in Vietnam

After graduating from The Citadel in 1963, Truman served in South Vietnam as a Squadron Commander with the 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing at Bien Hoa Air Base. In charge of over 700 men and providing for their health, morale and welfare, Truman quickly saw the need for backyard living areas to keep his men on the base and out of trouble in close by Bien Hoa. His squadron had the dubious honor of having the highest venereal disease percentage rate on the base, and his wing commander demanded he do something about it. Providing material scrounged from the Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade, attractive backyard patios began springing up all over his cantonment area. Ten men to a hut, they began setting up grill stations, bamboo pergolas, bars, complete with iceboxes, and seating to accommodate guests. The rest is history – the men stayed on base more, the “VD rate” went down dramatically and Kemp was given an award by the Air Force for his innovative methods in increasing the morale and welfare of his men, by providing “attractive backyard living environments.”
